Our Toronto Cancation

What happens when you mix a moose, hockey and 30 birthday candles? A 30th birthday getaway weekend in Canada, or as I like to call it, a “Can-cation.” About two weeks ago Sean and I celebrated his big birthday by taking a long weekend in Toronto, and it was full of surprises.

Let’s back up two months when I first surprised him with the trip. One of the major benefits of his work travels means we can pretty much fly and stay for free on points. So how do you give your husband a gift using his points? You start by buying him a nice weekender bag that he has been hinting at, and then planning all the details so he doesn’t have to lift a finger. We also like to “joke” that I never help plan our trips and I simply show up with my bag packed. And by “joke” I mean he makes the jokes and I listen. But for his special day, I decided to take control and do all the planning for once.

I put together a few slides about our trip and put a printout inside the bag. Here’s a video of the presentation:

Because Sean really hates surprises, all I needed was one more surprise that he would not suspect. Conveniently, his brother Logan and girlfriend Augusta were also planning a trip to Toronto the same time of year to visit where she grew up, so all I had to do was ask nicely to make it his birthday weekend, and there you have it: Little Brother + GF surprise Big Brother. It was the perfect way to spend some quality time with them and add a special touch to his birthday weekend.

Hanging out in the Delta SkyClub before our flight. One of the perks of all his travel = wife getting upgraded to first class.

We did the surprise unveiling at The Burger’s Priest, a restaurant I saw on Anthony Bourdain’s The Layover. Everything went off without a hitch and I was only slightly nervous in the half hour beforehand. Customs took forever and traffic was bad, but luckily our meetup time of 2pm was spot on.

We pretty much stuck to the plan from the video with these exceptions: we went to dinner on Friday with my college roommate and her husband at Marben (so good!) and on Sunday, we were too tired to do bikes (and frankly would have been pushing it with our flights) so we walked around Yorkville instead. Here’s a few of our favorite photos from the weekend.

Logan and Augusta had a few plans of their own, so it was a great way to spend some alone time and do things together.

Sean loves soccer so catching was a great way to spend his special day.

All in all, we absolutely loved Toronto. Fall is a beautiful time to visit with changing leaves and cooler temperatures. We did not have a bad meal the entire time. We loved the culture and the international feel. Everyone was very friendly. It was easy to walk around Yorkville to all the shops and restaurants. I definitely recommend visiting Toronto for a special weekend getaway.

Looks like I missed this one last fall. Just a year behind on email! What a wonderful vacation. I wanted to grab that hamburger right off the page a scarf it down Then, top it off with that berry dessert. So happy that you can both travel and enjoy while you are young. This was a precious trip you will always remember…the Rhoades Brothers together in Canada!
